Slivered Almond Cookies

"The thought of holiday cookies brings back vivid memories of my childhood.
My family has been using [this recipe] for more than 25 years."

Makes 6 dozen

1 1/2 cups butter
2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon almond extract
3 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
confectioners' sugar to flatten cookies

ALMOND GLAZE:
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup heavy cream or evaporated milk
1 teaspoon baking powder

TOPPING:
1 cup blanched, slivered almonds

Cream butter and sugar thoroughly. Add beaten eggs, vanilla and almond
extract, and beat well. Sift flour with salt and baking powder, and blend
into creamed mixture. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheet.
Flatten cookies with a glass dipped in confectioners' sugar. To make Almond
Glaze, mix together egg, cream and baking powder until smooth. Brush
cookies with glaze. Sprinkle tops of cookies with slivered almonds. Bake at
350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Cool on rack. Store in tightly sealed
container.
