                          Oatmeal Fruit Cookies

   4      tablespoons   unsalted butter (1/2 stick)
   1      cup           firmly packed dark brown sugar
     1/2  cup           granulated sugar
   1      large         egg
     2/3  cup           milk
   1      teaspoon      vanilla extract
   1 1/2  cups          sifted all-purpose flour
   1      teaspoon      baking soda
   1      teaspoon      cinnamon
     1/4  teaspoon      ground cloves
     1/4  teaspoon      ground nutmeg
   3      cups          rolled oats
   1      cup           dried fruit such as figs, apples, and--
                        apricots
   1      cup           raisins

1.  Cream together butter, sugars, egg, milk, and vanilla.  Stir together
flour, baking soda, and spices, and add to butter mixture.  Stir in oats,
mixing well.  Stir in dried fruit and raisins.

2.  Chill dough for several hours.

3.  Heat oven to 350F

4.  Drop batter by teaspoonfuls, about 2 inches apart, onto baking sheets.

5. Bake for 12 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool.

Makes about 4 dozen.

NOTES : This is the best-ever version of the traditional oatmeal-raisin
cookie:  chewy, spicy, and filled with fruit.
